Last week I opened Mudbox and decided to start creating some assets for my environment design as a way of further developing my design ideas and gaining more experience with using Mudbox to sculpt more natural assets for a 3D environment.
I looked at some sketches which I drew a few weeks ago and then started sculpting one of the things which I drew, which was a part of the central area I designed which would have a Nordic statue atop a stone platform. These were just some simple sketches to get an idea of the environment I wanted to create.
I decided that first I would make the base and then in my spare time I would start modelling the statue.
This model was much easier to create than I thought it would be, I simply started with a cube and then stretched it into the shape I wanted. After this I began using the sculpting tools to create the general shape of the platform.
I used the flatten tool in some areas to give it the appearance of being made up of stone slabs however I wanted it to look worn-down so especially on the edges I gave it some more round properties.
Once I was pleased with the shape I used the spray tool. This was very useful to help give the model the rough, rock-like texture which I wanted to create. I also inverted the sculpt tool and created some markings around the rock.
In order to texture the model I navigated to the paint tools and used something called ‘projection’ which gave me the ability to insert an image on to the screen and use it as a stencil to project on to my model.
I did this multiple times on all sides of my model until it was blended in properly and gave it the correct appearance.
Due to my inexperience creating more natural looking objects such as rocks I’m quite pleased with how this turned out. Next I am going to be focusing on the statue model which I will place on the platform I modelled.
